Oprah Interviews Carmen Ejogo for VIOLET GREY

Exclusively for VIOLET GREY’s The Violet Files magazine, Oprah Winfrey talks to Selma star Carmen Ejogo about their Oscar-nominated film, the life-changing potential of a bubble bath, and the importance of beauty.

Shot at a private estate in Los Angeles, the story went live at VIOLETGREY.com this morning, Wednesday, February 11th.

O.W.: What was it like knowing there was a woman—a black woman—behind the camera, managing and directing the entire experience.

C.E.: I have been in this business long enough to know that Ava had to exhibit some very special qualities  not to mention stamina—to get to a place where she was taken seriously. I ultimately felt that what she had undertaken was quite incredible and trailblazing, not to mention that she was doing it with such grace, vision and leadership.

O.W.: That’s what I admire, her ability to lead that group really. Okay, so let’s do some fun ones. What’s the best night of your life and why?
C.E.: Yikes! That’s really hard. What would yours be?

O.W.: Well, the best night of my life was actually recently. It was pouring rain. I had a fire and the dogs were here and Stedman was in his office and I was curled up on a sofa reading the most exquisite book. I had a hundred and twenty-some pages to go and I just looked around the room and thought, “I am so happy. I mean, God, I am so happy! I hope it rains all night or at least until I finish this book!”

C.E.: What was the book?

O.W.: You must get it! It’s called Ruby. It’s by a first-time African-American novelist named Cynthia bond. It now goes on my list of top five all-time great books, which includes Roots and To Kill A Mockingbird. It’s a love story and the language is just astounding. So anyway, it was the combination of rain, a chill in the air, dogs and a good book. That’s it.

C.E.: One of my most enjoyable evenings was around a campfire in the mountains of Colorado. I was with my mom and two kids and we spent the entire night singing songs and telling stories about each other. It was just one of those really wonderful family moments.

O.W.: What are the most important qualities in a romantic partner?

C.E.: Kindness, empathy, compassion, passion, and a sense of humor. And intelligence. I’m a sucker for somebody that’s got serious brain power.

O.W.: It’s a good turn-on, isn’t it? So what comes first for you, kindness or intelligence?

C.E.: Kindness, actually. I’ve been with the intelligent guy who’s mean-spirited and a real jerk. That’s no fun to be around. Intelligence starts to get pretty dull if it’s not coupled with kindness.

O.W.: Oh, that’s really good. Are you a bath or shower woman?

C.E.: Baths. Absolutely. I’ve got the lavender essential oils and the whole routine down at this point.

O.W.: I was in Provence last summer, antiquing, and found this pure oil that they harvest in the lavender fields. I have a gallon of it that I transfer to different bottles by my bathtub. It’s an art form for me, bathing. So you’re a woman after my own heart.

C.E.:  I’ve had as many as maybe three, maybe four baths in a day. Is that really excessive?

O.W.: Oh, you beat me. I think one every night is enough. But I will not take a bath without some kind of bubbles. As a kid I would use Ivory liquid soap and Joy dishwashing detergent because I didn’t want to clean the tub.

O.W.: Okay, I love this game: if you could invite three people, dead or alive, to your home for a dinner party, who would they be and what would you serve?

C.E.: I’d invite Josephine, Napoleon Bonaparte’s wife. I want to know more about what made that woman tick. She was quite a fascinating creature. I would also invite Gandhi. Now let me lighten the whole scene up with Reggie Watts. He’s this awesome, out of his mind comedian who I’m a little bit obsessed with. As far as the menu, it would be a potluck dinner. Gandhi could bring some Indian food, Josephine would bring a French dish, and I would make my three favorite desserts: banofee pie, crème brulee and panna cotta.

O.W.: How important is being beautiful to you?

C.E.: I think my definition of beautiful has shifted over time. It means something different than it did when I was fifteen and aware that how I looked had power. Now it’s more about character and having something to say. When I see those things in someone, I find that very attractive, particularly in women. It’s important for me to set an example for my daughter so I actively try to stay away from projects or situations that make me too hung up on the exterior. To be honest that’s always been a criteria for choosing work, avoiding the vanity trap.

GET THE LOOK: LAURA DERN AT THE 2015 ACADEMY AWARDS

For the 2015 Academy Awards, mark. Celebrity Makeup Artist Kelsey Deenihan worked with Best Supporting Actress Nominee Laura Dern.

“Laura is wearing a gorgeous metallic pewter custom Alberta Ferretti dress which immediately sparked the idea of incorporating all different metallic shades in the makeup. Instead of using the same metallic tones as the dress I wanted to play with different shades and include mauves and bronze metallics into the look,” Kelsey said.

(null)

Here’s how to get Laura’s look:
1. Kelsey prepped Laura’s skin with a thin layer of Murad Hydrodynamic Moisturizing Cream followed by Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield to smooth fine lines and creases.
2. After the skin was hydrated, Kelsey took a medium fluffy brush and applied a thin veil of Chanel VitaLumiere Foundation to Laura’s face and décolletage.
3. To accentuate Laura’s cheeks, Kelsey applied Avon Ideal Luminous Blush in Classic Aura followed with mark. Touch and Glow Shimmer Cubes for a rosy radiant glow.
4. Laura’s metallic eyes were created from the Avon True Color Eyeshadow Quad in Chocolate Sensation. Kelsey swept the #1 shimmery bone color across the brow bone under the brows, the #2 pewter color across Laura’s entire lid and finished with the # 3 warm brown shade in the crease and outer corners of the eye.
INSIDER TIP: By keeping the darker shades in the crease and outer corners, the eyes will appear larger.
5. For a subtle addition of color under the eye, Kelsey swept a little of the # 3 metallic brown from the Avon True Color Eyeshadow Quad in Metal Eyes under the bottom lashes.
6. She defined the eyes by applying a thin line of Avon Super Shock Gel Eye Liner Pencil in Intense Brown across the top lash line and finished off the eyes with a couple generous coats of NEW Avon Super Extend Winged Out Mascara in Blackest Black.
7. To complement Laura’s metallic eyes and luminous skin, Kelsey kept the lips natural with a hint of pink by using NEW Avon Ultra Color Indulgence Lipstick in Honey Flower.

Jenna Dewan Looks Stunning with Sleek Modern Hair from KMS California at The Oscar’s 2015

All eyes were on Jenna Dewan on the Oscar’s red carpet with her sleek modern ponytail and her stunning Zuhair Murad couture dress. Celebrity hairstylist, Derek Williams, said, “I love Jenna’s darker hair color in contrast to the white dress and really wanted to show off her eyes.” This was the inspiration to keep the hair sleek and modern with some added slight texture to the ponytail.

(null)

To get this look, first Derek started with Jenna’s hair towel dried and applied KMS California FREESHAPE hot flex crème ($20.99) and blew it dry straight using a flat brush.

Once dry, Derek went over Jenna’s hair with a flat iron for a more smooth finish, concentrating it on the ends of her hair. Then he ran a dime sized amount of KMS California SILKSHEEN polishing serum ($13.50) throughout her hair for shine and brushed it back into a low, sleek ponytail.

To finish off the look Derek sprayed Jenna’s ponytail with KMS California HAIRSTAY dry xtreme hairspray ($18.99) to give the ponytail some slight texture and movement.

THE LOOK: Elegant, polished and refined

INSPIRATION: Inspired by Penelope Tree’s pre-fringe look, celebrity hairstylist Blake Erik gave Gwyneth Paltrow a simple, chic, and beautifully sleek look.

Here is his step-by-step breakdown:
To begin, Blake washed the hair with John Frieda Frizz Ease Beyond Smooth Frizz Immunity Shampoo and Conditioner.
Next, he prepped the hair by applying John Frieda Frizz Ease Beyond Smooth Frizz Immunity Primer.
Then, Blake blowdried her hair straight using a round brush.
For added sleekness, he flat-ironed hair from the chin down, keeping the lift at the roots from her blowout.
Next, he created a deep side part and sectioned off the front side of the hair on both sides. The remaining back side of the hair was parted at ear level and pinned up.
Blake then brushed the front sections back and under the pinned hair. He tied both sections together using a clear elastic band and let the remaining hair fall over the secured sections.
For a touchable finish, he spritzed John Frieda Frizz Ease Keraflex Flexible Hold Hairsprayall over her hair.

RITA ORA BRINGS BRIT STYLE TO THE OSCARS The Rimmel Ambassador Showcases The London Look At The Oscars 2015

(null)
Rimmel ambassador Rita Ora showed-off her inimitable London style at The Oscars. Kathy Jeung’s inspiration for Rita’s Looks was Hollywood glamour. Rita was wearing a navy satin strapless Marchessa gown with metallic embellishment paired with sleek modern hair. To compliment her look, Kathy wanted to do a classic makeup look with a twist: a cat eye with navy eyeliner instead of the usual black. The look was completed with long lush lashes, contouring, bronzer, soft pink blush and a satin texture nude lip.

To get this look Kathy applied Rimmel London 25 Hour Foundation with Comfort Serum with a brush then further blended it with a makeup sponge. Then Kathy brushed Rimmel London Mono Blush on Rita’s cheeks for a pop of color.

For Rita’s eyes, Kathy used Rimmel London ScandalEyes Thick and Thin Liquid Pen Eyeliner and Rimmel ScandalEyes Shadow Stick in Naughty Navy over the black liner along the upper lash line. Next enhance Kathy finished Rita’s eyes with Rimmel London Wonder’lash Mascara with Argan Oil in Black.

To complete this look, Kathy used Provocalips in Dare to Pink.

THE LOOK: A modern take on classic, 40s waves

INSPIRATION: Inspired by the sleek and beautiful lines of Reese Witherspoon’s dress, celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel gave the Best Actress Nominee a deep middle part that transitioned into soft cascading waves for the red carpet tonight. “I wanted to play up the duality of texture and create a look that had strength and softness at the same time,” said Adir.

Here is his step-by-step breakdown:
Adir started by creating a severe middle part and then applied John Frieda Luxurious Volume Volume Building Mousse from roots to mid shaft to towel-dried hair.
To continue building the perfect foundation, Adir applied John Frieda Frizz Ease Beyond Smooth Frizz-Immunity Primer from roots to ends before blow-drying hair away from the face with a medium-sized round brush.
Once dry, Adir tucked hair behind both ears and pinned into place. “A great tip to avoid dents in the hair is to use a business card and hair clip to hold the style in place,” said Adir.
To create the soft waves in the back, Adir used a 1″ curling iron and curled the hair in a barrel curl from ends to mid shaft, pinning them in place to cool down. He continued that motion throughout the entire back section of the hair that was down.
Before removing the cooled curls from their pin set, Adir sprayed John Frieda Frizz Ease Keraflex Flexible Hold Hairspray. He then removed all the pins and let the hair drop, applying more hairspray on a paddle brush and brushing out the curls into a smooth 1940’s wave.
Adir then removed the business cards that were holding the front structure of the hair in place and applied John Frieda Frizz Ease Expert Finish Polishing Serum with a coloring brush to create duality in texture.
To finish, Adir spritzed John Frieda Frizz Ease Keraflex Flexible Hold Hairspray to lock in style all night.
