Paola Hernandez Presents “A Look Within” at NY Fashion Week

Photo credit: Marc Hall and Jay Marroquin

Paola Hernandez presented her Fall 11 collection, titled “A Look Within,” at the W New York on Sunday February 13th during Fashion Week.  Set up in two suites, 13 models, both male and female, wore Paola’s fall looks that ranged from layered corset dresses to long wool layered coats.

The collection was based on the idea of balance. It was shown through the simple colors, black and grey. This was paired with a silver lining, suggesting light and revealing the power for creation within.

The presentation consisted of a mix between models and actual artists from the New York Academy of Art. The authenticity of the artists highlighted the concept behind the collection.

Guests, while sipping on Perrier and Whiskey Sours provided by Auchentoshan, were able to actually observe the artists creating, whether it was painting, sculpting, drawing, or writing.

The hair was styled by Jenny B. and the CUTLER team and the make-up by Lyne Desnoyers and the MAC Pro Team.

Paola also designed several pieces for Global Glam, a project created by the W Hotels.  The pieces were showcased at the presentation at the Box at Lincoln Center on Thursday February 10th. They will be selling at the W boutiques beginning of August 2011.

Romas Couture and Contemporary RTW: MBFW Premiere

Designer Linda Rowe Thomas presented her highly anticipated Fall/Winter2011 collection for Romás in this year’s New York Fashion Week on Sunday, February 13, 2011. The Fall/Winter 2011 collection is inspired by Godiva and her love for chocolates. Every girl has her guilty pleasures and this collection opens a visual box of chocolates with luxurious silks, intriguing textures, and intricate details.

With the congenital desire to redefine glamour, Linda Rowe Thomas founded her company Romás. Eight years later, she made her grand entrance into fashion’s mainstream by debuting the Romás collection at the Designer’s Choice Fashion Preview alongside Project Runway finalists. Romás has premiered in the Los Angeles Fashion Circuit and at the Little Rock Fashion Week 2009. The collection was featured in February 2010 among “Designers to Watch” during the New York Fashion Week pre-show. Her Spring/Summer 2011 collection, which debuted in the 2010 Mercedes Benz Fashion week, was the culmination of her passion for sophisticated, ready to wear pieces with a Parisian flare.

Her collection infused two genres of fashion which very rarely collaborate well— couture and ready to wear. It is evident that Thomas’s self cited muse, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, is revered through her designs. Thomas completely understands a woman’s body and the importance of using quality textiles such as, raw silk and charmeuse.

Toni Francesc Fall 2011 Runway Video

Toni Francesc showcased a Fall 2011 collection titled GARUDÀ at MBFW. The collection was an interpretation of the Phoenix, an eagle-sized bird with red plumage burns in its own flames only to rise from its ashes every 500 years. The Phoenix has long been presented as a symbol of rebirth, immortality and renewal.

The collection provides an insight to each phase ranging from the fire to the ashes, and focuses on intense golds, oranges and reds as main colors. Garments are composed of luscious silks and wools. Generous, straight forms are combined with volumes that nip in at the waist and hug the body in clean lines that trace the female figure.

You can also visit www.tonifrancesc.com where you can find all the runway shows of past collections.

Binetti Fall 2011

Here are some highlights of Diego Binetti’s Fall 2011 collection from the recently concluded Mercedes Benz Fashion Week where the designer showcased tunics, skinny-legged pantsuits, dolman sleeved dresses, draped skirts and asymmetrical gowns.

Diego Binetti grew up in Buenos Aires, assisting his dressmaker mother. The designer credits his enthusiasm and passion for design with being exposed to a world of free expression at an early age. The Miami International University of Art & Design alum continued to hone his craft with a four-year study at Instituto Marangoni in Milan.  He has enjoyed successful tenures at Bulgari and Jill Stuart, where he worked closely with some of the industry’s top stylists. His bohemian chic collection is sold in over 60 storefronts across the United States and 22 countries worldwide.

NYFW Fall 2011 Recap

Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011 has come to a close, but the trends are just beginning! Edward Tricomi of Warren-Tricomi creates a customized look for each of the below shows, allowing these runway trends to become your own.

DOUGLAS HANNANT FALL 2011

THE LOOK: Hair Meets Modern Art

The look for the Douglas Hannant Fall 2011 RTW show was inspired by the 1920’s era, but more architectural and modern.  There was a line signature to the looks (strong lines meeting soft lines), as well as variations of finger waves. Edward and the Warren-Tricomi team used nothing but wigs, scissors and a bit of hairspray to achieve these architectural abstract looks.

RICHIE RICH FALL 2011

THE LOOK: Finger Waves

The models strutted their stuff in vibrant colors which lit up the stage and sported different hairdo’s which each told a story of their own.  The far-out hair was a main focal point of this show.  Glam, elegant finger waves rocked the runway, as the hair done by Warren-Tricomi played a major role in the edgy show. The inspiration for this look was Marie Antoinette reincarnated into the East Village.  She is an exploration of the true New York female renegade; from 1920s prohibition sexy to 1980s pure punk.

IVANA HELSINKI FALL 2011

THE LOOK: 60’s Beehive

A bold statement was made at this season’s Ivana Helsinki show.  Charcoal eyes and over the top beehives filled the runway to match this nature-inspired look.   The 60’s inspired statement was created by pinning the hair into a very statuesque, channeling the modern Brigitte Bardot.

Stunt Show Fashion Show

A model walks out. Then another. Then another. Then the Designer. Then there’s applause. That’s been the fashion show formula since time immemorial — well, since Paris in the thirties — but this past week in New York, that went out the window. More than any other season in memory, designers did very public stunt shows this week.

Elise Overland opened fashion week with her show on ice, held on the ice rink at the Standard Hotel starring Johnny Weir, and a gigantic ice sculpture.

Catherine Malandrino is very particular about mise-en-scène: “I will only show at a one-of-a-kind space,” she insisted before her Fall presentation in the cavernous former New York Times building that will be torn down and rebuilt as a hotel beginning next week.

Moncler Grenoble Fall 2011. Photo credit: Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

Moncler Grenoble conceived their presentation as a flash mob. The winning absurdity of the skiwear-clad group dancing in tandem to a mash-up of tunes ranging from Barbra Streisand’s “People” to Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” was brilliant theater.

Thom Browne showed his women’s collection in the august wood-paneled interior of the New York Public Library. Tweedy clothes, tweedy library. Makes sense.

The biggest stunt goes to Band of Outsiders whose mountain-climbing-inspired show opened with the male models rappelling down from the ceiling.

Spectacular Visual Presentation at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for Allegri

Italian outerwear brand Allegri made its New York debut with a spectacular visual presentation at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  As the only brand showing outdoors, Allegri reveled at this exclusive opportunity and affirmed its power by producing a stunning spectacle.

Allegri revealed its technically stylish Fall 2011 collection against a backdrop of strong tradition with a nod to its past. Among the retrospective coats were some signature collaborative pieces including designers Giorgio Armani, Martin Margiela and Romeo Gigli. This clever arrangement speaks to the creativity and maturity of Allegri.

Guests walked into a courtyard transformed for the occasion with a sea of Italy’s top selling Allegri umbrellas suspended midair and were surrounded by large images narrating 40 years of the brand.  Allegri CEO Gian Maria Argentini emphatically states, ” Few can match what Allegri does in outwear —we combine the latest and technologically advanced materials with a fit which is stylish and modern.”

Fall/Winter outfits included some of the most original outerwear materials and styles available in today’s retail marketplace  –Techno Wool, Teflon Flannel, Water Repellent Moleskin… Much awe was generated for its Rain Cashmere collection.  Allegri has been able to waterproof cashmere without altering its tactile experience. Allegri outerwear reigns as one of the few companies, which has true garment craftsmanship relying on technology research functionality and comfort.

For Fall 2011, Tracy Reese was inspired by rich hues, sculptural shapes and interesting textural combinations. Each look has some point of brilliance – a shot of metallic, antique copper and silver, or a vibrant pop of raspberry, aqua or amber – breathing new life into muted neutral tones of toffee, black, brown and gray. Tactile pairings and more voluminous silhouettes enhance 3-dimensionality.  Graphic and floral prints remain strong for the season, adding a spark of individuality to fall ensembles.
